Mucoadhesive delivery systems for oral disease and barrier tissues
Ionic liquids — tunable salts that are liquid near room temperature — can solubilize difficult drugs, enhance tissue penetration, and adhere to mucosal surfaces. We combine ionic liquids with nanoparticle delivery systems to create hybrid materials, including mucoadhesive nanoparticle–ionic liquid patches designed for diseases of the oral cavity, where conventional formulations are cleared within minutes.
